Xcom Enemy Within

XCOM: Enemy Within is an expansion pack for XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It was released on November 12th, 2013 in North America and November 15th 2013 elsewhere. Announced at Gamescom 2013, XCOM: Enemy Within adds new abilities, upgrades, weapons, and a new soldier class to combat new enemy threats. This expansion pack also introduces new resources, new maps, new tactical and strategic gameplay, and new multiplayer content.

The expansion introduces a new enemy faction in the form of a secret human paramilitary society titled EXALT. Its members work to disrupt XCOM's activities as they see XCOM as a rival in the acquisition of alien technology and an impediment to the aliens' human experimentation. To this end, EXALT sets up sleeper cells in Council nations around the world; the cell's hidden presence magnifies the effects of any panic the country may receive. Furthermore, a cell can go active, performing one of three different EXALT Operations against XCOM: Sabotage, steals funding from XCOM; Propaganda, increases panic in the country where the cell is located; or a Research Hack, reverses progress on the project currently being researched.

An additional complication/strategy for MUJ is that it can be destroyed by anything from a pistol upwards, so stray fire (e.g. a near miss on an enemy standing near it) or excessive use of area-of-effect explosives will wipe it out. Sometimes, it's brutally necessary to sacrifice MUJ, due to the aforementioned tendency for more baddies, and it hurts to do so.

Which brings me back to the main event, the new soldier types. Honestly, I really say all I wanted to about the Mechs in the last piece, but I will say here that they're my favourite new thing. They really change the game, both by shaking up the traditional move'n'Overwatch formula, and because having soldiers right in the thick of it - and with the right equipment even punching Sectopods and Cyberdiscs and Beserkers straight in whatever passes for their kissers - alters the dynamic. They're a long way from invincible, but they do lend a strong sense of taking the fight to the enemy rather than simply trying to survive them. The Gene mods are a little less interesting and certainly less immediate, but I think they're ultimately the more powerful addition to the XCOM arsenal.

That's not faint praise: the original XCOM campaign was a well-balanced marvel. The strategic mode fed into the tactical mode, every piece of progress by the player was countered by an imposing new enemy, and every choice that had to be made was an interesting one. Enemy Within maintains that balance while adding several new dimensions to both the tactical and strategic phases of the game.

Missions play out in grid-based, turn-based combat where your small squad of soldiers faces off against numerous enemy threats. You're commanding soldiers to move about to take cover or get to the high ground and so on, and each soldier fills a class role - a soldier, a support, a sniper, a heavy and so on.

The game is as excellent as ever and the controls don't really obscure that fact (though keyboard and mouse remains the optimum for this kind of experience) but there's definitely some dodgy performance going on, especially when the game is doing the CPU-intensive task of crunching the numbers to decide what a particular move is going to do or how an enemy is going to move.

Gene Mod and MEC upgrades both cost Meld and take soldiers out of action during the conversion. MEC Troopers also carry an added cash and Meld cost, from having to build their various battle suits. This keeps the value of these powerful new abilities, but still within reach. Gene Mods let you further develop your favorite squad members, but MEC Troopers are worth the extra investment, for making battles feel the most dramatically different.

Parents need to know that XCOM: Enemy Within is a strategy game filled with graphic violence, blood, and gore. It earns its Mature rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. Players use a number of weapons -- including guns and grenades -- to kill enemy soldiers and aliens and will see a lot of death. The strategy game also has strong profanity and supports unmonitored voice chat.

If you liked last year's XCOM: Enemy Unknown you'll love XCOM: Enemy Within. Along with 40 more (and better) maps, there's the new enemy faction (rebel humans called the EXALT), which spices things up, along with new weapons, an alien resource ("Meld"), and new soldier abilities: "gene mods" (so you can genetically enhance your troops into super soldiers) and MECs (Mechanized Exoskeletal Cybersuits, each with weapons including a flamethrower). Although it would've been nicer if it were cheaper than $40 (or $30 for PC), this expansion does exactly what a good add-on should: deliver a ton of new content and refinements over the original game. Note: All three versions of the game are the same.

iPad owners with a thirst for a thinking person's game will find a lot to like in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. There are numerous ways to engage enemy combatants, and lots of customization options for crafting your dream squad. XCOM: Enemy Unknown's story isn't particularly intriguing, but the squad-vs.-squad action is enough to keep strategy fans coming back for just one more game.

A decent tank in a game where they are needed, the Assault class does what it needs to in Enemy Unknown. All of the Assault Class's abilities help it do what it needs to: get in the enemy's face and shoot it with a shotgun.

I deleted some save games from within the the game and now it seems that I cannot save games anymore, only on rare occasions when a new mission begins. Also a new game that I started does not get saved.

In taking on the series, Civilization creator Firaxis has shown reverence and understanding for what makes it special. XCOM's ingredients are hard to recombine: strategy with consequences. A technology metagame where you use the enemy's weapons against them. Emotional attachment to player-created soldiers and a feeling of meaningful death when you lose them. High-fidelity destructibility. 2ff7e9595c
